What is Wells Art Contemporary (WAC)?
Wells Art Contemporary (WAC) is an annual, juried exhibition and arts programme showcasing contemporary painting, print, sculpture, photography, installation and mixed media. The show brings together emerging and established artists selected by an independent panel of judges and is known for its striking setting inside Wells Cathedral, Somerset.
2025 Exhibition: Dates & Venue
Where: Wells Cathedral, Wells, Somerset, UK
When: 8 October – 1 November 2025
Who: Work by around 80 artists across multiple disciplines is on display this year.
Why it’s special: The Cathedral’s Gothic architecture provides a dramatic backdrop for contemporary work, from framed pieces in the cloisters to site-responsive installations.
Private View — Highlights from the Night
The evening brought together artists, curators and visitors for first looks at the selected works installed throughout the Cathedral. The contrast between historic stonework and contemporary artworks made for powerful moments (and great photos!).
Artist’s note: “I’m honored to be part of this year’s exhibition! The Cathedral is one of my favourite spots and a fantastic place to recharge my energy.” — Aga Kubish

Title: Habitat
Medium: Linocut print (hand-printed)
Scale: Large format
>> 'Habitat' in RWA Bristol

Habitat explores dense organic structures and natural growth, echoing the living textures of the Cathedral’s surrounding landscape. Seeing it in the cloisters, among sandstone arches and tracery, felt like the right kind of conversation between past and present.
Why WAC Matters
Quality & reach: WAC’s open call attracts international entries, with a competitive selection process that celebrates experimentation and craftsmanship.
Setting: Few exhibitions can match the impact of contemporary work shown within a world-class architectural monument.
Community: The programme connects artists with audiences across Somerset and beyond, making high-calibre contemporary art accessible to visitors of all ages.
